Horta and the Vatican: Strange bedfellows

Ramos-Horta as President of Timor?
God help Timor!

The Prime Minister, José Ramos-Horta, a candidate for the upcoming presidential election has been distributing leaflets showing a picture of him meeting the pope. This is a blatant and crude attempt to mislead the voters on a supposed connection between candidate Ramos-Horta and the Vatican. The voters, being devout catholics and largely illiterate with little access to information, are being led to believe that somehow Ramos-Horta's candidacy has the support of the Pope, the highest authority in the Catholic church.

Hihihihi!... I use the Pope you
use CNRT! Alkatiri is f*cked!
Hihiiiihihi!...

During Ramos-Horta's campaign lauch, he deliberately sported a shirt showing an image of Christ in clear view of the people. This is nothing more than a ploy to attract the people to Ramos-Horta's supposed religious side, which every sensible person knows he has none. But to the largely uninformed and illiterate East Timorese, the use of religious icons became a powerful tool to attract gullible voters.

Is Ramos-Horta deserving of a Catholic church backing? Perhaps yes from the point of view of the ultra-conservative Catholic church of Timor-Leste. Ramos-Horta leads a life which violates every moral code inherent to this congregation. He never had a legal marriage to his first wife although they have a son together. They were separated many, many years ago. In factm in Timor-Leste unmarried couples are regarded as second class citizens by the Catholic church. The Church does not recognise their child and refuses to baptise them. Yet Ramos-Horta gets so much backing from the Catholic church of Timor-Leste. Ramos-Horta also leads an adulterous life even by Church standards. With the gay issue being of central moral concern to the Vatican, it would be surprising that the Church even considers lending its support to someone as immoral and un-Christian as Ramos-Horta.

Horta and a mystery woman

Ana Pessoa joined the first wives'
club a long time ago. The best
move she ever made for sure.

Ramos-Horta also openly supported the US invasion of Iraq, a move which the Pope openly criticized.

Stragen-bedfellows? Indeed.

Comments:
Jesus Christ welcomed sinners. So should His Church. Amen.

It is one thing to be forgiven for sins, but it is another to forget your moral obligations as a leader. Great example being set by Horta. Maybe the church only forgives the likes of Horta and forgets the rest of us.

We could also recall Christ's words reported in the Gospel of John:
"He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone..".

Horta is no angel. Everyone knows this. He has always been like this. He doesn't pretend otherwise. At least he is no hypocrite in this area.

He is an easy target on sexual morality. But how many senior political figures in T-L would pass the pure angel test in this area. Not very many from what I know.

But I don't care. More important for me is what Horta has done for T-L. During his 24 years of exile, he did ten times more for T-L than the rest of the external delegation combined. Whatever criticism we might make of him since 1999, we can't deny his deep personal commitment to the future of T-L.

Horta has done much for T-L and it will be poorer if does not continue his contribution. He is as capable as anyone else in T-L to make a good president.

If we are going to talk moral issues, who initiated, promoted and voted for the recent legislation to grant former members of parliament lifetime pensions and other special privileges? What would the masses think of this if it became widely known? Please discuss.

Aussie Timorphile

Aussie Timor Phil,

Do you know much about the legislation you talked about? Or are you just echoeing what others (Fretilin critics) are saying about this legislation? Have you read this legislation?

Do you know that Ramos-Horta initiated this legislation with some members of the opposition parties?

Until you do, let me know what you think.

The main point of my comment was to say that there are much more important things to look at than sexual morality etc.

What is more important, is what people do politically in their positions as political leaders. That was why I made questions about the MPs pension legislation. It is a concrete political issue, not gossip and innuendo (T-L and republika banana has already too much of this).

The pension legislation:

Yes I have read the text.

My questions: Genuine questions for which I don't know the answers. I am happy to have them answered.

Who initiated?
Who spoke in favour?
Who spoke against?
Who voted for?
Who voted against?
Why did Xanana veto?

Important or not important? What do you think?

Woudl God welcome a sinner that is lying to the people using His symbols?

I have known Horta forever and I can assure you that if he became a good catholic, then the chickens have grown teeth.

does anyone know about u.n resolution 1272(2001)

Anon 5:09 PM:

Do you mean UN Security Council resolution 1272 (1999)?

What do you want to know?

This post and the 'Who will I vote for?' post are 2 of the most petty, nasty and irrelevant things I have seen written in this blog. I used to read this blog daily and recommend it to others. Now I think I'll just flush it down the toilet where it belongs.

I am glad at last to see a republika banana supporter give some credit to Xanana and Horta. The first time I noticed this in this site. More to come I hope instead of the immature and opportunistic smears against them.

(By the way, I am also opposed to opportunistic smears against Mari).

Yes, Horta and Xanana were each part of a much bigger story, but it is far from being just a FRETILIN story. The truth is the Timor resistance, particularly from the mid-1980s, was much more than FRETILIN. To be sure, it was a key player. But FRETILIN does not own the history of Timorese resistance.

I don't know everything about the resistance (internal & external), but I think I know more than you would give me credit for - especially the external. If an honest history of the work of the external front is ever written, it will show Horta did much more of the hard and difficult work of keeping the issue alive in international circles than any of the others. Horta became known internationally precisely because he was doing the work that had to be done. I am not saying the others outside didn't contribute - but with the exception of the late 1970s and the late 1990s, hardly anyone outside lusophone countries even knew they existed. There were long periods when Horta worked without the blessing of the FRETILIN external delegation who couldn't keep up with the political and structural changes that were occurring in the internal resistance (and which they resisted). To his credit, Horta won't speak negatively now about those difficult times.

But look. My real point was not really to argue about who did more. My point is that Horta has and continues to be an important person in T-L's future. He has that right because of his historical and present record. I don't like a lot of what he says and does, but perfect heroes just do not exist. The attacks on him on republika banana are an insult to anyone who genuinely cares for the future of T-L.

Re Pension laws.

T-L Parliamentary website doesn't appear to be functioning.

Portuguese text of bills can be found on links from:
http://www.laohamutuk.org/reports/07Pensaun.htm

You say Xanana veto's everything from Fretilin. Did he veto every piece of legislation from the FRETILIN-controlled parliament? I don't think so.

I agree Xanana didnt veto everything specially when he was out of the country. It was the only time legislation can pass through Parliament without the President wanting to change important parts of the legislation like the coma to a full stop.

Someone should whack up the excerpts from Lynn Minionn's book "Hello Missus" and of Horta begging for her to marry him over SMSs......the type of dignified stuff a young country like Timor-Leste needs from a wannabe President. Its stupid enough to text someone with such infantile stuff, but doing it insistently to the point of it comprisig harrassment is astounding from someone who believes he is presidential material. Then lets not forget the child assault incident in December last year just before Christmas...little repoted much to the disgust of many. He assaulted a child at the airport camp. If anyone doubts it look up the Timor Post of 27 December 2006 for details.

Wow....my guy for president should I have a vote for it is not ramos Horta.

The Lynne Minion book was a piece of crap. She threw herself at JRH and was constantly SMSing HIM... Not the other way round. I know, I knew her and wished I had never met her. OH, and JRH did not assault a child at the airport camp. The incident happened on the beach road near Victoria restaurant. And the little brat deserved it.

Anyone who quotes from "Hello Missus" let alone name dropping the author, is a very sad case indeed. I've never read a greater load of SHITE in my life. Let the Timorese decide on their president without cooking their minds with this kind of malais trash. PLEASE!
