Alfredo Reinado models himself on his Indonesians patrons and not East Timorese

Thomas Matulessy Pattimura, Indonesian
hero from the Maluku province who fought
against the Dutch domination. Alfredo
Reinado's hero. Any resemblance to Reinado
is not coincidental.

Alfredo Reinado, illegitimate son of a
Portuguese colonial official fights to
defend his interests.

There are people who say that Reinado chose Same as his battlefield to fight out the ISF because he wanted to portray this battle as similar to the resistance put up by Regulo D. Boaventura against the Portuguese colonial domination. I think these people are mistaken, including Reinado if he ever thought such a thing.
Reinado models himself on the Indonesians whom provided him with much of his education. His brief stay in Timor-Leste, he worked as a mechanic where he struggled to make ends meet. His life in Indonesia was no better, a fact which compelled him to move to Timor-Leste. While in Timor-Leste he heard a number of his friends were planning to sail a boat to Australia. Reinado's motive for joining this adventure was economic and not political. Reinado was never active in the East Timorese resistance, not in Timor-Leste under Indonesian occupation, not in Australia. He was invited to join Timor-Leste's fledgling army because he had experience in Indonesian navy. But his own arrogance quickly put him at odds with another overseas recruit, also from Australia, Lieutanent Colonel Donaciano Gomes, AKA Pedro Klamar Fuik. Pedro was directing the army mutineers and giving them orders. He quickly identified himself as a westerner and had some kind of standing among the mutineers. Reinado felt he had to do something to outstage Pedro therefore plunging the country into chaos.

D. Boaventura, the Manufahi hero who became the
symbol of resistance against Indonesia occupation.

Comments:
Lets the people sees what their direction, don't contaminate people's mind with complicated things... that would make the water more snore.

People of this country would appreciate for those who yelling out about peace and justice not direct them to another tense - violence...

has to with a lot of things including his personal view of the East Timorese, which he feels inferior to him because he is half European.

Horta is also Mestizo, Alkatiri is Mestizo Arabe, what are the difference? Remember, Lopez da Cruz is pure Timorese, he betrayed TL. So in Alfredo's case, there is nothing to do with race!

He disagreed with the decision from Mari to send troops to deal with the petitioners. Mari failed to manage PNTL as well as FDTL, both his ministers, Lobato and Roque were useless/incompetent. Now, Fretilin blame the opposition for the crisis, what a silly party! Run away from responsibility is what Fretilin is now doing.

Well, people have known that the court has convicted Lobato for distributing weapons to civilians. Where can Fretilin hide this fact? Who will Fretilin blame for this?

Fretilin is now living in fear, desperate situation.

Geta Lolo!

Why all this focus on Alfredo? He is a non-entity who has caused some trouble. My guess he has little real support in Timor but he is a lightening rod for people to express frustrations with what is going on in Timor. It is simply a mistake to see him as the cause of all the problems in Timor. The more I see about him on this site the more convinced I am that the Fretilinistas are incapable of focussing on the real problems in Timor and are not prepared to do something constructive about them.

Take a positive lead to create a new future! Stop wasting your time on two-bit rambos like Alfredo.

Alfredo might not be no one in the eyes of anyone, but at least he has principles to fight for justice and democracy. Evils and Devils are those who sit in the government who form militias and use guns to shut the mouth of the opposition group. These peoples are the real criminals, not Alfredo. Alfredo was born because of injustice and threat against freedom of expression.

The Fretilin leaders are the criminals, they have all proofs to be. The three mass graves of opposition leaders supporting integration killed by Fretilin in 1975 are still in Aileu rest in peace in Aileu - What a shame.

After 30 years of violence, Fretilin still appears with the same criminal face. They are the enemies of all the mankind in East Timor. No one government should use gun to shut it citicen who stage demostrations for justice and democracy.

Alfredo is the hero of Democracy and Justice.

Fitun Lotuk Lemorai

Fitun Lotuk Lemorai, if Alfredo is a hero of democracy and justice he must stop running around East Timor with guns. The growth of democracy is impossible while this continues.

I had some sympathy for Alfredo's refusal to participate in military action against demonstrators in 2006. But that sympathy evaporated once he started threatening his own military actions if the government didn't resign. That's not democracy.

I respect the passion that all Timorese feel for the future of their country and how it is governed. But if that passion turns into violence, the chances of East Timor becoming a just, democratic society are very small.

Alfredo's way is not the way forward.

The writers view on Mesticos is pretty much as racist as the Mesticos who may feel superior to the East Timorese. But let me remind you that not all Mesticos are as what you perceive. Many Mesticos were members of FRETILIN and lost their lives among Timorese in the mountains, I for one lost mestico family members who were members of the FRETILIN CCF in the mountains. However I share your opinion on Alfredo. Anyone interested in a stable East Timor must support all attempts for Alfredo to face justice so that he does not continue to be used by groups or individuals to push forward their own political agenda.

In regards to Aileu, there is as we all know indiscriminate acts made by individuals and groups during Timor’s history. When UDT undertook the coup of 1975 surely they must of been aware of the circumstances and be prepared for any repercussions of staging an armed insurrection. No one likes the loss of lives in any conflict, where it may be the FRETILIN militants who were victims of UDT militants in Ermera or UDT members at Aileu who were the victims of a faction of FRETILIN. Wether it was the Militias or the Pro-Autonomist political leaders the integrationists as an entity were complicit in the deaths of thousands of Timorese under the Indonesian occupation. They were the eyes and ears of the Indonesians, they were the ones to sustain the Indonesian occupation and many became rich as a result of their support of Indonesia receiving money at the expense of the lives of Timorese.

Most ordinary Timorese are now looking at building Timor Leste’s future. They don’t want to live in a country where the opposition’s only objective is how they can topple FRETILIN rather on how they can participate in Timor Leste’s democratic development.

Most people who criticise FRETILIN are being unrealistic and have a preconceived outlook on Timor and its politics. Critics claim FRETILIN is undemocratic yet they don’t criticise the opposition when they try to force the President to dismiss the Government and dissolve the Parliament. Critics say the Interior Ministry armed militias yet they don’t ask why the Petitioners were already armed before Rai Los group came into existence or the fact that the Police command had ordered the distribution of weapons in Aileu and Liquica again well before the Interior Minister took the controversial actions he had taken. No one has asked the fact that the Police had disintegrated and that the public order was an issue if a remedy to close the void that had been left by the Police disintegration.

So who are the people who are in possession of illegal weapons in the districts today? Alfredo and his armed groups, the petitioners, the anti FRETILIN groups, many of these groups had weapons prior to any distribution of weapons by the Interior Minister. A justification on why the Interior Minister distributed the weapons is subject only to the judicial system which includes the right to appeal.

FRETILIN has never given credit to the fact that after Mari’s resignation it came out in peaceful protest, the largest rally held in Dili during the crisis. No one has given credit to FRETILIN for organising peaceful rallies at Baucau, Same, Ermera and Oe-Cussi. When the opposition organised rallies they attacked IDP’s, burned homes and attacked media installations. Anti-FRETILIN groups publicly threaten the courts of impeding violence if the Rogerios case does not deliver a decision in favour of their opinion. Supporters of Alfredo create havoc by burning homes, loot and stone cars, why not call a mass rally in support of Alfredo? They can’t because they have no popular support.

FRETILIN wants peace and stability but all anti-FRETILIN groups seem to do is forcefully push forward their agenda through destabilising the country and the use of violent gangs. It is not a coincidence that suddenly SH and 77 the gangs responsible for clashes have decided to back Alfredo publicly.

The elections is the only way to resolve the issue because the people will decide on who will represent them rather then individuals and groups speaking a false rhetoric on behalf of the people. This is why say what you want to say it is the people’s voice that counts. If FRETILIN loses so be it, but if FRETILIN I would like to see the faces of those who claim that FRETILIN leadership is unpopular or FRETILIN is out of touch with the people.

The commentator above says:
"The elections is the only way to resolve the issue because the people will decide on who will represent them."

I don't think the elections will solve the existing/underlying problems of impatience, disappointment, disaffection and distrust. Just winning seats in parliament wont achieve this.

The real solutions will come when the focus is on how to work together to solve real problems and construct sustainable, responsive, transparent, accountable systems of government. I can't see this happening until Fretilin and its opponents each stop wasting time plotting, blaming and rumour-mongering about each other.

Fretilin, as the major political party, has the strength and special responsibility to take a lead in initiating and promoting a cooperative approach with all sectors of society. I hope dearly that it will.

Cheers

You should check the real situation in East Timor, instead of reciting from some Fretilin brochure wrtitten by some activist abroad... A lot of the East Timorese businessmen and "entrepeneurs" are in fact Fretilin people who were working with the Indonesian generals and makinf big profit on the percentages the Generals gave them
