Rogerio Lobato has accused sections of the church of involvement in the attempted coup...
Rogerio Lobato has accused sections of the catholic church of involvement in the "attempted coup." Could there be any truth in this?
Who knows? One thing that I have noticed is that the church has been very quiet lately. I would have thought that now would be a good time for the church to drive a campaign to oust Mari Alkatiri. To the contrary, the church even came out saying that removing Mari Alkatiri could actually cause bigger problems to emerge (e.g. Bishop Nascimento). Why is the church taking this stance all of a sudden? Where is father Martinho Gusmão (a vocal critic of the government). Where is padre Domingos Maubere? Where is padre Apolinario and Filomeno Jacob? These men have remained eerily silent. Could they have have had some kind of involvement in the recent turmoil? Maybe not to the point of aiding the rebels materially, but through the "good" moral and political support? Then, having realised that their plans have backfired, they just discreetly distance themselves from the rebel groups? Starting to shift their attention away from the political problems so as not to araise too much attention?
Then again the incidence of the past few weeks are still under investigation. I hope the church cooperates fully with the investigation.
By the way, sources within the UN's investigation team has denied the allegations against the former minister of the police, Rogerio Lobato. The source maintained that the investigation has just began and there is not enough evidence to accuse anyone. The accusation against Rogerio Lobato was published in a Portuguese media.
